A day in the life of Sheikh Abu Bakr Ash-Shatry

March 30th, 2006

Have you ever wondered, listening to your favorite Qari reciting the beautiful aayat of the Quran, what the person behind the melodious voice is like? Or how you would give anything to have recitation like theirs? If your answer is “of course!”, then you’ll love this video of Sheikh Abu Bakr Ash Shatry. It’s ‘a day in the life of…’ interview with the Sheikh where the sheikh basically walks you through his routine.

One thing I should let you know before you go watch it, it’s in arabic 😐 but definitely worth watching. Although I understand parts of it, I’m definitely not able to transcribe the video otherwise I would have.

Zaid ibn Thabit (ra) narrates that

“the first gift made to the Messenger of Allah after he took up residence in the home of Abu Ayyub, was brought to him by myself. It was a big wooden bowl filled with bread crumbled up with milk and butter. I told him that my mother had sent him the bowl. He commented “may Allah bless her”. Then he called over his companions and they ate. Then a wooden bowl came from saa’d ibn ubada. It was bread mixed with meat gravey. Zaid ibn Thabit then says “not an evening went by without there being at the door of the messenger of Allah three or four people who would come one after the other carrying food. He remained there at the home of Abu Ayyub for seven months”.

Inivitations

March 7th, 2006

Sometimes it so happens that we get invited for gatherings/events/celebrations that fall on the same day and we fall into the dilema of deciding which one to accept or reject. I was searching for something today totally unrelated and came across this hadith I thought I would share it here.

Narrated AbdurRahman al-Himyari:
A companion of the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) reported him as saying: When two people come together to issue an invitation, accept that of the one whose door is nearer in neighbourhood, but if one of them comes before the other accept the invitation of the one who comes first.

Google Maps Qibla Locator

March 6th, 2006

Qibla locatorI’ve been working on a little project utilizing the google maps api to make a Qibla direction locator. It works almost exactly like google maps except that it displays an overlay pointing towards the Qibla. The direction in degrees from true North is also given at the bottom of the page. Another nifty feature is a map-in-map view much like pic-in-pic view found on most new TV sets. As this is pretty much a work in progress, I’m sure you’ll notice many bugs. Please do let me know.

Head on out and take a look for your self. Be sure to leave your comments.

Today was Alhamdulillah a good day. Not that I’m complaining about the other days but today was special because I finally got word from my lawyer that my work permit was approved. Alhamdulillah, such a relief. It’s still going to take about a couple of weeks for me to receive it in the mail. Till then, it’s job hunting time!
